I was really looking forward to this book. On the one hand, I love Italy, and on the other hand, I thought it was great that a not-so-young woman is finally in the leading role. Clover is 61, so I’m still missing a few years, but she definitely has more identification potential for me than the standard heroines, some of whom are very young, that are usually found in love stories and RomComs.
And here comes Clover: successful businesswoman, smart, attractive, on her way to the last big breakthrough at „XS – Finance with Heart“ – and instead of actually moving up to the senior management, she is one of the first to be fired during a business takeover. Her world comes crashing down, Clover is in complete shock. Her partner Jack isn’t exactly helpful either, thinking more or less only of himself, and so Clover spontaneously decides to take some time off. She visits her cousin Zoe in Italy, and completely reorders her life.
And while Clover completely shuts down, a new man enters her life and is about to completely turn her emotional world upside down once again.
I found this topic totally intriguing. Clover is forced to do a complete reboot for really all areas of her life, and that’s harder to do at a certain age. And, of course, you have to reevaluate a lot of things here. What do I actually want to do in life anymore? What is important to me? The protagonist deals with this, and I found it authentically portrayed. Everything falls apart, but there is also lot to win. I actually found this aspect of the novel more interesting than the love story. This was beautifully written, too, very romantic, no doubt about it, but the parts about Clovers new identification process had me more gripped. Whereby it was all woven together wonderfully.
Before I forget; theres a great subplot in the last third od the novel: that’s when Clover’s nearly 80-year-old mom Eleanor enters the scene. Bored with her life in the retirement community, she also mixes things up in Italy, and falls in love with Franco, who is over 80. That was the fun part of the novel for me: Eleanor and Franco in a sports car on tour, that had real charm 😉.
The novel is written from Clover’s first person perspective, and I found the mental comments Clover makes to her fellow humans often hilarious; just my sense of humor 😉. In general the book is written very warmly, funny, and even as a non-native Englsih speaker I could fly through the pages.
I conclude: this was a wonderful novel with charming protagonists, serious themes, but also wonderfully ligh-hearted love stories, and an ode to the true values in life: Friendship and family. All set against a beautiful, mostly wintry backdrop in Italy. I recommend this one with great pleasure!

Auf dieses Buch war ich echt gespannt. Zum einen liebe ich Italien, und zum anderen fand ich es klasse, dass hier endlich mal eine nicht mehr ganz so junge Frau in der Hauptrolle ist. Clover ist 61, da fehlen mir noch ein paar Jährchen, aber sie hat auf jeden Fall für mich mehr Identifikationspotential als die standardmäßigen teils blutjungen Heldinnen, die sonst so in Liebesgeschichten und RomComs zu finden sind.
Und hier nun kommt Clover: erfolgreiche Geschäftsfrau, smart, attraktiv, auf dem Weg zum letzten großen Durchbruch bei „XS – Finance with Heart“ – und anstelle tatsächlich in die Geschäftsleitung aufzurücken, wird sie bei einer Geschäftsübernahme als eine der ersten entlassen. Ihre Welt bricht zusammen, Clover ist völlig geschockt. Ihr Lebensgefährte Jack ist auch nicht unbedingt hilfreich, dieser denkt mehr oder weniger nur an sich selbst, und so entscheidet Clover spontan, sich eine Auszeit zu nehmen. Sie besucht ihre Cousine Zoe in Italien, und sortiert ihr Leben komplett neu.
Und während Clover komplett herunterfährt, tritt ein neuer Mann in ihr Leben und stellt auch ihre Gefühlswelt noch einmal komplett auf den Kopf.
Ich fand die Thematik total spannend. Clover ist gezwungen, einen kompletten Neustart für wirklich alle Bereiche ihres Lebens hinzulegen, und das fällt ab einem gewissen Alter schwerer als in jungen Jahren. Und natürlich muss man hier auch viele Dinge neu bewerten. Was will ich eigentlich im Leben noch machen? Was ist mir wichtig? Die Protagonistin setzt sich hiermit auseinander, und ich fand das authentisch dargestellt. Alles bricht auseinander, aber vieles gewinnt man (Clover!) auch hinzu. Diesen Aspekt des Romans fand ich tatsächlich interessanter als die Liebesgeschichte, die natürlich auch noch eingebaut war. Hey, die war gut, sehr romantisch, keine Frage, aber die Selbstfindung hatte mich mehr gepackt. Wobei das alles wunderbar miteinander verwoben wurde.
Ach ja, zum Nebenplot im letzten Drittel: da betritt Clovers knapp 80jährige Mama Eleanor die Bühne. Von ihrem Leben in der Seniorenanlage gelangweilt, mischt sie in Italien auch noch mal alles auf, und verliebt sich in den über 80jährigen Franco. Das war für mich der Spaß-Teil des Romans: Eleanor und Franco im Sportwagen on Tour, das hatte echt Charme 😉.
Geschrieben ist der Roman aus der Ich-Perspektive von Clover, und das liest sich oftmals auch sehr witzig. Die mentalen Kommentare, die Clover zu ihren Mitmenschen abgibt, fand ich oftmals urkomisch; genau mein Humor 😉. Generell liest sich das Buch sehr flüssig, auch für mich als Nicht-Muttersprachlerin war es wunderbar, ich konnte durch die Seiten fliegen.
Ich schließe ab: das war ein wunderbarer Roman mit charmanten Protagonisten, ernsten Themen, aber auch wunderbar leichten Liebesgeschichten, und eine Ode an die wahren Werte im Leben: Freundschaft und Familie. Und das alles vor einer wunderschönen, meist winterlichen Kulisse in Italien. Hat mich erreicht, empfehle ich sehr gerne weiter!
