Ein neues Buch von Kathy Lette: Da bin ich dabei 😊. Ich habe Ms Lette in den 90ern geliebt und mit ihren ersten Büchern damals mein Alltagsenglisch und vor allem meine umgangssprachliche Schlagfertigkeit geübt und aufpoliert. Ihr Wortwitz ist einfach legendär. Feministin par Excellence und Königin der Ironie. Teilweise sprachlich schon fast too much abgedreht, ich merke immer, ein Buch langt erstmal, aber dieses Buch kann ich dann auch inhalieren und genießen.
Soviel der Vorrede, und natürlich hat die Autorin auch bei ihrem neuesten Werk mit spitzer Zunge geschrieben und für viel Grinsen meinerseits gesorgt, aber natürlich geht es ja immer auch um den Inhalt. Also, in Kurzform, nicht nur Ms Lette ist mittlerweile Ü50, ihre Protagonistinnen sind es ebenfalls. Und die 4 Freundinnen Matilda, Jo, Penny und Cressida merken es eine nach der anderen: der Zenit ist überschritten, und menopausale Frauen werden abgewürgt. Alle 4 sind sie sehr erfolgreich in ihren jeweiligen Berufen, aber alle 4 werden sie gnadenlos abgewürgt und durch jungere Ladies ersetzt. Oder ersatzlos gestrichen für semierfolgreiche Männer. Bestsellerautorin Matilda bekommt keine neuen Book Deals mehr, die preisgekrönte Reporterin Penny wird zugunsten ihren eher einfältigen Co-Moderators aus der Sendung gekickt, Jo ist Filmemacherin in Hollywood und durfte ebenfalls gerade abtreten, und Cressie, ex-Filmstar, ertappt den Göttergatten beim Stelldichein mit einer viel jüngeren Nachwuchsschauspielerin. Man pflegt die Wut und die Enttäuschung, aber Ms Lettes Protagonistinnen sind Fighterinnen und gründen den Revenge Club. Rache soll man kalt genießen, und mit viel Vorlauf schaffen es die Ladies, einen Widersacher nach dem anderen zu zeigen, wo es langgeht……und nebenbei erfahren sie auch viel über sich selbst, über ihre Freundschaft, die eigentlich jahrzehntelang brach lag (warum eigentlich? Die Auflösung wird noch mal spannend und extrem emotional.), und was wirklich zählt im Leben.
Soviel zum Inhalt in Kurzform. Die Langvariante dauert über 400 Seiten, und keine einzige ist langweilig 😊. Was wie schon gesagt am Lettes unvergleichlichem Erzählstil liegt, aber auch daran, dass sie Gesellschaftskritik haarscharf analysiert und mit Witz darreicht. Ich bin im selben Alter wie die 4 Damen, und kann so gut wie alles unterschreiben, was hier an Kritik geboten wird. Will sagen, das Quartett bietet Identifikationspotential. Eigentlich auch für jüngere Frauen, denn irgendwann werden wir ja alle älter, oder 😉? Und dabei wird die Autorin nie männerfeindlich (hey, im Gegenteil!), aber sie hält der Gesellschaft gerne einen aufpolierten Spiegel vor.
Und schlussendlich muss ich sagen, das war super witzig, und es hat Spaß gemacht, mit den Ladies durch ihren Rachefeldzug zu marschieren.
Kathie Lette muss man im Original lesen. Ich habe mal ein Buch von ihr auf deutscher Übersetzung gelesen, das war okay, aber stilistisch geht bei Übersetzungen von Autoren, die einen sehr eigenen Stil haben, zu viel verloren. Also Leute, greift zum Original!

A new book by Kathy Lette: I’m there 😊. I loved Ms Lette in the 90s and with her first books I practiced and polished my everyday English and, above all, my colloquial repartee. Her wit is simply legendary. Feminist par excellence and queen of irony. Sometimes the language is almost too crazy, I always notice that one book at a time is enough, but then I can inhale and enjoy this book. So much for the preface. The author wrote with a sharp tongue in her latest work and made me smile a lot, but of course it’s always about the content. So, in short, not only Ms Lette is now over 50, her protagonists are, too. And the four friends Matilda, Jo, Penny and Cressida notice it one after the other: the zenith has been passed and menopausal women are being strangled. All 4 of them are very successful in their respective professions, but all 4 of them are mercilessly discarded and replaced by younger ladies. Or deleted without replacement for semi-successful men. Best-selling author Matilda no longer gets any new book deals, award-winning reporter Penny is kicked off the show in favor of her rather simple-minded co-host, Jo is a filmmaker in Hollywood and has also just been allowed to step down, and Cressie, a former film star, catches her husband having a rendezvous with a much younger young actress. You cultivate anger and disappointment, but Ms. Lette’s protagonists are fighters and found the Revenge Club. Revenge should be enjoyed coldly, and with a lot of advance notice, the ladies manage to show one adversary after the other where to go… and at the same time they also learn a lot about themselves, about their friendship, which actually lay dormant for decades (why actually ? The resolution will be exciting and extremely emotional.), and what really matters in life. So much for the content in short form. The long version lasts over 400 pages, and not a single one is boring 😊. As already mentioned, this is due to Lette’s incomparable narrative style, but also to the fact that she analyzes social criticism in detail and presents it with humor. I’m the same age as the four women and can agree with almost everything that’s being criticized here. I mean, the quartet offers potential for identification. Actually also for younger women, because at some point we’ll all get older, right 😉? And the author never becomes anti-male (hey, on the contrary!), but she likes to hold up a polished mirror to society. And finally I have to say, it was super funny and it was fun to march with the ladies through their quest for revenge.
You have to read Kathie Lette in the original. I once read a German translation of a book by her, which was okay, but stylistically too much gets lost in translations when authors have their own unique style. So people, grab the original!
