Ich habe mittlerweile einige der Bände dieser Reihe gelesen und mag sie sehr gerne, daher greife ich bei Neuerscheinungen hier immer wieder zu. Held der Serie ist der ex-DCI Dan der Londoner Metropolitan Police, der sich im wohlverdienten Ruhestand in der Toskana niedergelassen hat und hier ein Detektivbüro aufgemacht hat. Sein treuer Gefährte ist der Labrador Oscar, der mit ihm zusammen ein unschlagbares Team bildet. Dan hat einige Freunde in der lokalen Polizei, bei denen er immer mal wieder als Übersetzer einspringt, wenn es gilt, britische Verdächtige zu verhören, und natürlich ist dann auch immer seine Ermittler-Expertise gefragt – auf diese Art und Weise ist Dan immer wieder in Mordermittlungen involviert, zu denen er ansonsten natürlich keinen Zugang hätte.
In diesem 10. Abenteuer von Oscar und Dann werden die beiden zu einem Fall in toskanischen Weinbergen gerufen. Auf dem Weingut eines alternden US-Rock-Stars wird eine unbekannte Leiche aufgefunden, und schon bald zeigt sich, dass mafiöse Strukturen dahinter stecken könnten…. zusätzlich wird es interessant als sich eine der Gäste auf dem Weingut als Dans Ex-Frau herausstellt, die hier mit einem neuen Lebensabschnittsgefährten auf der Bildfläche erscheint……
Ja. Die Bände dieser Serie sind allesamt relativ kurz, so auch dieser mit 240 Seiten in der Printausgabe (ich hab das eBook gelesen, da waren es etwas über 200), und sie lassen sich allesamt auch super kurzweilig lesen. Williams schreibt flüssig, amüsant, charmant, und kennt sich in der Gegend aus – sprich, die Bücher sprühen vor Italien-Liebe und Lokalkolorit. Man fühlt sich echt wie in der Toskana, und das italienische Lebensgefühl kommt für mich echt rüber. Deshalb „verzeihe“ ich dem Autor auch, dass sich der Aufbau der Romane relativ ähnelt, und dass wir als geneigte Leser schon relativ früh wissen, wo der Hase langläuft.
Dan ist einer von den Guten, und auch das ist nett zu lesen.
Das hört sich jetzt vielleicht ein wenig lahm an, soll aber nicht so rüberkommen. Für mich ist jedes Dan-und-Oscar-Mystery ein wunderbare Zwischendurch-Unterhaltung, und so was muss man auch erst mal schreiben können. Ich mag die ganze Cast mittlerweile sehr, und man freut sich wie bei einer Dokusoap im TV, wenn man die Protagonisten wiedertrifft :-).
Also: für alle Fans von cozy crime und italienischem Dolce Vita eine Lese-Empfehlung 🙂

I’ve read several volumes in this series so far and really liked them, so I keep coming back for new releases. The hero of the series is Dan, a former DCI of the London Metropolitan Police, who has settled in Tuscany in well-earned retirement and opened a detective agency there. His loyal companion is Oscar, the Labrador, and they form an unbeatable team. Dan has some friends in the local police force, for whom he occasionally acts as a translator when British suspects need to be interrogated. Naturally, his investigative expertise is always in demand – this means Dan is repeatedly involved in murder investigations he would otherwise have no access to.
In this 10th adventure of Oscar and Dann, the two are called to a case in Tuscan vineyards. An unknown body is found at the vineyard of an aging US rockstar, and it soon becomes clear that mafia structures may be behind it… things get even more interesting when one of the guests at the vineyard turns out to be Dan’s ex-wife, who appears on the scene with a new partner…
Yes. The volumes in this series are all relativly short, including this one, with 240 pages in the print edition (I read the eBook, which had a little over 200), and they’re all super entertaining to read. Williams writes fluently, amusingly, charmingly, and knows the area well – in other words, the books are bursting with love for Italy and local color. You really feel like you’re in Tuscany, and the Italian way of life really comes across to me. That’s why I „forgive“ the author that the structure of the novels is relatively similar, and that we, as interested readers, know what’s going on relatively early on.
Dan is one of the good guys, and that’s also nice to read.
This might sound a bit lame, but I don’t mean it to come across that way. For me, any Dan and Oscar mystery is wonderful entertainment, and you have to be able to write something like that. I really like the whole cast now, and it’s like meeting the protagonists again in a TV docusoap :-).
So: a recommended read for all fans of cozy crime and Italian dolce vita 🙂
