Der 13. Band der Reihe um den Privatdetektiv und Ex-Detective Dan Armstrong der Metropolitan Police, der sich in der Toskana niedergelassen hat, ist erschienen, und ich lese immer sehr gerne mit. Ich mag Dan und seinen Labrador Oscar sehr gerne, und bin ein Fan der Serie. Ich habe nicht alle Bücher gelesen, und nicht alle sind brillant – aber dieser hier ist wieder sehr gelungen!
Man kann sich eines merken: wo immer Dan und Oscar hingehen und selbst wenn es nur zu einem beschaulichem Wochenendausflug sein soll, es wird mindestens ein Mord passieren, komme, was da wolle. Hier nun also auf nach Venedig, die uralte Lagunenstadt, zauberhaft, charmant, und atmosphärisch wie alles, was T.A. Williams als Setting für seine Romane auch wählt, bestens eingefangen.
Dan begibt sich – mal wieder – in die Welt der Schönen und Reichen. Alice Graceland, Hollywooddiva in ihren 60ern, hat ihn engagiert. Auf ihrem venezianischem Anwesen hat sie zu einem „Murder Mystery Weekend“ geladen, und es soll ein ganz besonders Mystery Dinner werden: alle Gäste sind Personen, die ihr in ihrer langen Hollywoodkarriere irgendwann einmal ziemlich krumm gekommen sind, und diese alten, aber nie vergessenen Dinge hat Alice in ihr Mystery-Skript eingebaut….und dies gefällt nicht allen der geladenen Stars. Außerdem geht das Gerücht um, Alice habe ihre Memoiren geschrieben – was auch nicht jedermann gefällt. Es kommt, wie es kommen muss, während des Mystery Dinners geschieht ein wirklicher Mord – und Dan muss wirklich ermitteln, und nicht nur den Commissario spielen.
Ja, das war mal wieder cool! Ich fand die Idee mit dem Murder-Mystery echt witzig, vor allem, wenn dieses in Venedig spielt und unter dem Motto eines mittelalterlichen Karnevals steht. War einfach mal eine andere Grundidee, und bietet sich irgendwie an, wenn man als Handlungsort diese faszinierende Stadt wählt. Wie heißt es im Klappentext? Murder in paradise? Auf jeden Fall ist hier Mord in glamouröser Umgebung angesagt.
Natürlich arbeitet Dan wieder mit der lokalen Polizei zusammen, mittlerweile in Band 13 kennen er und Oscar eigentlich alle Polizeistationen in der Toskana und man ist connected 🙂
Der Plot war gut, wir hatten viel Action, viele interessante Charaktere, und Dan und Oscar in Höchstform. Es gab wilde Verfolgungsjagden hoch zu Boot durch die venezianischen Kanäle, es gab Hollywoodfeeling und Dramatik, Abrechnungen alter Feindseligkeiten und neue Freundschaften, die geknüpft wurden – und all das auf wie immer knappen 300 Seiten. Hat mich allerbestens unterhalten. Band 14 kann kommen, ich bin bereit!
….quer einsteigen in die Serie ist ausdrücklich genehmigt, alles persönlich Relevante zu den Hauptcharakteren kriegt der geneigte Leser nebenbei mit, und man hat als Neuling somit nichts verpasst. Auf geht’s!

The 13th installment in the series about private detective and former Metropolitan Police detective Dan Armstrong, who has settled in Tuscany, has been released, and I always enjoy reading along. I really like Dan and his Labrador, Oscar, and I’m a fan of the series. I haven’t read all the books, and not all of them are brilliant—but this one is another great success!
One thing is certain: wherever Dan and Oscar go, even if it’s just for a quiet weekend getaway, at least one murder will occur, come what may. So, off they go to Venice, the ancient lagoon city, enchanting, charming, and atmospheric, just like everything T.A. Williams chooses as a setting for his novels—perfectly captured.
Dan finds himself—once again—in the world of the rich and famous. Alice Graceland, a Hollywood diva in her sixties, has hired him. At her Venetian estate, she’s hosted a „Murder Mystery Weekend,“ and it’s meant to be a very special mystery dinner: all the guests are people who, at some point in her long Hollywood career, have crossed her, and Alice has woven these old, but never forgotten, incidents into her mystery script… and not all of the invited stars are happy about it. There’s also a rumor going around that Alice has written her memoirs—which isn’t to everyone’s liking either. As fate would have it, a real murder occurs during the mystery dinner—and Dan actually has to investigate, not just play the part of the commissario.
Yes, that was cool! I thought the murder mystery idea was really funny, especially since it’s set in Venice and has a medieval carnival theme. It was simply a different premise, and it just seemed fitting when you choose this fascinating city as the setting. As the blurb says, „Murder in paradise“ – in any case, murder in a glamorous setting is definitely on the agenda.
Yes, that was cool! Of course, Dan is working with the local police again. By volume 13, he and Oscar practically know every police station in Tuscany, and they’re well-connected 🙂
The plot was good, with plenty of action, many interesting characters, and Dan and Oscar at their best. There were wild boat chases through the Venetian canals, a touch of Hollywood drama, old grudges settled, and new friendships forged—all in the usual concise 300 pages. I was thoroughly entertained. Bring on volume 14, I’m ready!
…jumping into the series mid-series is expressly permitted. Readers will pick up all the relevant information about the main characters along the way, so newcomers won’t miss a thing. Let’s go!
